summer has not be dragging on...
and we are having a hoot.....
Peter at the Birds of Prey Centre.
Albert took both boys to the Centre which is renowned for assisting birds of prey that have been harmed in the wild. The birds are nursed back to health and are released into the wild. The birds used for the shows and offered to be held are those which will not be released due to their injury preventing them from ever functioning well in the wild. One hawk had lost it's eyesight and therefore will remain at the Centre as it would be unable to obtain prey for food.

Weekend Getaway August 13-15
Creation beauty and renewed friendships in Elkford. The town is named after the Elk River, which likely was named by explorers who observed vast numbers of elk along the river.
We were treated like royalty, at the "white house" by our dear friend, Val who is a fabulous cook and baker.
Good thing she took me on an hourly walk each day to burn off the calories!
Peter and Gideon had great fun with Justice, friends of Val's in the neighbourhood. Here they are having a watermelon eating contest, which was followed by throwing the rinds over the fence to see whose went the furthest. They road their bikes lots, had water fights, and had a camp out in 8 degree weather! Brrrr! Our boys have been climatized to sleeping in the Airstream and thus were chilled in the wild, wild west evening air! Next sleepover will be indoors.
We drove up the valley to see the local coal mine, which employs most of the townsfolk. We saw the typical mining trucks and coal.
What we didn't expect was the natural history there too! Dinosaur fossils preserved at the entrance to the coal mining operation. Gideon was amazed and can't wait to tell Liam and Nathaniel!
On the route back to town, we discovered a horned owl that had been hit on the highway. Not sure if this was legal, but we have a specimen for further learning!

An interesting catch!
The boys and I headed out for a late afternoon hike along the Old Man River. We started up the "Horse Trail" and immediately Peter noticed a discarded pop can so he picked it up to return to the bottle recycling company for the deposit money. He also returned to the parking lot area to obtain an empty "doggy refuse" bag from the dispenser to place the pop can in. (the bags are provided free of charge for dog owners!).
We turned down the "Picnic Loop" which meandered along the river, and observed picnic tables every 25' or so. Notice the erosion along the pathway which resulted from the high water levels this past spring. Post and cable barriers had fallen down the bank and into the river!
Beer cans pitched into the bushes were reflecting the sun and caught our attention. Peter retrieved a few, while Gideon continued along the pathway. To Gideon's great delight he came upon a "Jackpot" as he called it! Six or more cans were discarded beside the picnic area.
Our "doggy bag" was full, so we improvised and strung up our catch of the day.
An entrepreneurial method of fishing.
We continued on our hike and enjoyed the water and making new friends. We plan to spend more days at the river, with our watershoes, fishing rods, and sunscreen and bigger water bottles - it was 29 degrees in bright sunshine!

Soccer camp 2010
Peter and Gideon are enjoying Soccer Camp - each week they spend an hour on drills and learning new skills. This provides a perfect opportunity for mom to grocery shop and get back to watch too. Albert was able to make it out yesterday to watch too. Their coaches are doing a wonderful job of keeping the boys and one girl focused on the skills and team building.
After 30 minutes of playing, the water bottles are empty and the boys are tired and sweaty!
We treated them to icecream at Costco which was well deserved after enduring the shopping too!

We spent the weekend at our house to work on outdoor maintenance and indoor cleaning. It was a surreal experience to be there, but also good to tidy up the yard and the interior.
Peter and Gideon were able to visit with friends throughout the weekend.
Playing at the river although it was chilly mountain water!
We also enjoyed a campfire and singsong with friends.
Before we headed back to Alberta, we were able to pick some fresh cherries and black currants. A great end to the weekend.
Splish, splash!
Each year the boys take swimming lessons. One pool to another can change the dynamics...like 3 metres longer! Peter was challenged but did well perfecting his techniques.
The highlight of his level of lessons was learning to dive. He really enjoyed this and doing a cannon ball off the board!
Gideon initially was in a level below his skill level so he moved up a level but was physically too small to do the endurance and breathing required for the front crawl. He was bound and determined to excel amidst 10 and 11 year olds!
The special priviledge on the last day was jumping off the board.
